In November, it was announced that Barrera was quietly dropped from the upcoming 'Scream' film over comments she made online.
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega recently enjoyed a reunion with their Scream castmates at the Motion Picture & Television Fund's The Evening Before gala.
Barrera shared photos on Instagram featuring Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Liana Liberato, Tony Revolori, Skeet Ulrich and Jack Quaid. The gathering excluded Ghostface and served as a sweet reunion for the Scream stars.
"Yeah 😍," Barrera wrote in a caption to her post. Ulrich commented, "Sweet reunion!!," while Quaid added a "HELL yeah" to accentuate Barrera's caption. "I just love ya," Gooding wrote in a comment, while Liberato wrote, "oooooh yeah."
Their characters, sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, had a familial connection to the original Scream villain, Billy Loomis (played by Ulrich). However, Barrera was let go from Scream VII due to social media posts related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, with the film's studio, Spyglass, citing a "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate." Barrera, in response, emphasized using her platform to raise awareness and condemned hate in any form.
Ortega's departure, announced the next day, was reportedly unrelated to Barrera's exit. In December, director Christopher Landon, initially set for Scream VI, also dropped out, describing the project as "a dream job that turned into a nightmare."
Original star Neve Campbell, who opted out of the previous sequel, hinted at uncertainties surrounding the franchise's future, emphasizing her past treatment and expressing openness to a call while highlighting her expectations.
